If you are wanting to become a disability support worker then there are more than just qualifications needed to make you suitable for the role.
You could be a teacher, you could be good at sports, maybe you love singing and dancing? You could be an allied health professional, or have worked in hospitality for many years. The point is, all clients are different, they have different hobbies, interests, diagnoses, and goals. This is why there is no one size fits all template for the ‘perfect support worker’.
The most important qualities a
support worker can have are their passion to help others and the ability to know what is needing to be done without asking. A successful support worker is one that understands the child and the family’s needs, shares common interests, and leaves a positive impact!
There are a number of different pathways to becoming a support worker, including lived experience and formal study.
Some desirable qualifications when working as a support worker are:
Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015) specialising in disability
Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43115)
Most employers will also require support workers to hold a current First Aid Certificate, Working with Children Check, Police Check, and NDIS Worker Screening. If the role involves transporting clients you will also require a reliable vehicle and comprehensive car insurance.
